WSU women’s basketball team’s struggles continue

The WSU women’s basketball team continued its late-season slide this weekend, dropping both games in Los Angeles in blowout fashion.

The Cougars (10-17, 5-11) first lost to USC 80-64 on Friday after Trojan freshman guard Minyon Moore torched the WSU defense for 32 points. Moore became the first player to score 30-plus points for USC in three years.

“I really had the support of my teammates to go out there and score,” Moore said. “I really was not looking at my score the whole time. I was just trying to help my team win.”

The Cougars’ offensive woes were furthered in the game, as the team shot just 30 percent from the floor in the first half compared to USC’s 54 percent clip. The Trojans entered the break leading 39-25.

In the third quarter, the Cougars scored nine unanswered points and reduced the Trojans’ 19-point lead to single digits with less than a minute to play in the frame.

After a 3-point basket from junior guard Pinelopi Pavlopoulou was reversed to a two-pointer, the Trojans fired back with a pair of 3-point bombs out of the review timeout to re-up their lead to 15 heading into the fourth quarter.

The Cougars again went on a run to start the period, outscoring the Trojans 10-1 midway through the fourth quarter to reduce USC’s 20-point lead to 11 with under three minutes to play. However, WSU’s momentum swing was halted when a traveling violation was called on a fast break play to end any threat of a comeback.

USC moved to 14-12 overall on the season with the win.

Two days later, No. 18 UCLA extended its home winning streak to 14 games with a 67-48 victory over WSU.

Junior forward Monique Billings tied UCLA’s single-game rebounding record with 25 boards and also scored 12 points.

“Our team focus was to fight and give it all that we have and to play until we’re empty,” Billings said.

UCLA opened the game with a 13-1 run to start the first quarter and take control of the game early. WSU junior guard Caila Hailey finally ended the Cougars’ scoring drought with a 3-point basket at the 5:36 mark of the period.

WSU went on a 10-3 scoring run in the second quarter to keep pace with the Bruins but failed to muster consistent scoring in the second half and UCLA’s lead mounted to 20-plus points.

“I’m proud of all of our players’ effort,” UCLA Head Coach Cori Close said. “I think it was a really good step forward, especially on the defensive end.”

WSU closes out its regular season at home with a pair of games against Utah and Colorado. The Cougars take on Utah at 6 p.m. on Thursday and follow up with a 1 p.m. matchup with Colorado on Saturday. WSU will also honor senior forward Ivana Kmetovska on Saturday before tipoff.
