Lunar New Year fireworks banned without permit

From staff reports

With Lunar New Year on Saturday, the Washington Fire Marshal is reminding state residents that it is illegal to set off or buy fireworks without a permit.

Marshal Charles Duffey said the permit can only be obtained from local fire authorities.

Pullman City Code dictates that permits for fireworks will only be issued for New Year’s Eve and Fourth of July celebrations, as well as WSU-sanctioned football games at Martin Stadium.

The city council must approve permits for any other celebrations. The city council’s review requires the fire chief’s investigation and recommendation, according to the code.

There are several countries in Asia that celebrate the Lunar New Year with fireworks. The holiday is usually celebrated over several days and celebrations take place throughout the state in several communities.
