Cougars defeat Marquette, advance to second round

WSU took down the Marquette Golden Eagles 3-1 to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Madison, Wisconsin.

The Cougars will face the third-ranked and regional host Wisconsin Badgers on Saturday.

Set scores of Thursday’s match were 25-21, 22-25, 25-19 and 25-20. Senior outside hitter Kyra Holt clocked in 22 kills at .386 hitting percentage for WSU and paced the team’s offense. Senior outside hitter Hailey Bethune followed with 14 kills and sophomore outside hitter McKenna Woodford tallied 11 kills.

Sophomore middle blocker Taylor Mims and junior outside hitter Casey Schoenlein had six blocks each. Freshman libero Alexis Dirige recorded 19 digs while junior setter Nicole Rigoni had 30 assists.

Marquette was led by redshirt sophomore outside hitter Taylor Louis with 18 kills and followed by freshman outside hitter Allie Barber with 12 kills. Senior libero Lauren Houg had 21 digs for the Golden Eagles.

The Cougars won the offensive and defensive battles in the match, recording 16 blocks to Marquette’s eight and 65 kills to the Golden Eagles 54.

WSU takes on Wisconsin at 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Kohl Center. The match will be broadcasted on www.ncaa.com.
