City Council talks sidewalks and police budget

One zone application ordinance and two resolutions regarding housing were approved during this week’s city council meeting.

Ordinance 16-16, a zone change application by Glenn Petry from Lumber Yard Partners LLC to take over the 33,600 square feet from the non-operational Pullman Building Supply Retail Center, was approved.

Resolutions concerning the Sunnyside Heights addition by the Itani Land Development III, Inc. and the Community Action Center (CAC)’s affordable housing project were both approved after discussion on sidewalks and traffic calming.

City Councillor Al Sorensen expressed concern for the lack of sidewalks after the roads are laid during construction. He also pressed on the fact that the south bypass would remain the same size and would not be expanded on until needed.

The police department request to up the four-fifths time record specialist positions to full-time was also approved.

During the public forum section of the meeting, local Janice Brown spoke out about her opinion on the council’s work with the police department. She stated that supporting parks was not a viable use of money when the council has put the public police proposals on hold.

“Last year and the year before that when a police officer would quit or go work somewhere else, (the council) would leave those jobs open to save money,” Brown said. “I would remove (the park) fund to support the police department.”

After her comments, the council continued onto the Park District public hearing. Mayor Glenn Johnson made it clear that the park funds were not a part of the general budget, and with no comments from the public the hearing was closed.

The City Council meeting ended with discussion on topics to be brought up at the meeting with District 9 state legislators in December. The topics to be discussed include the public records act, airport re-alignment, liquor and marijuana tax sharing, interest loans and public works trust funds.
