The WSU women’s soccer team will play at home on Thursday against Seattle University at 5:01 p.m. at Lower Soccer Field.

It was not a pretty match in Fort Worth, Texas on Friday for either WSU or Texas Christian University (TCU) women’s soccer teams.

TCU’s winning streak was put to a halt when a late goal by WSU freshman forward Morgan Weaver tied the score at 1-1 in the 88th minute. The physical contest generated 23 fouls committed by WSU (3-2-1) and 13 for TCU (5-0-1), as well as yellow cards for both teams and an ejection for the WSU senior forward Kaitlyn Johnson in the 69th minute. The draw was the first for both teams on the season.

WSU trailed the Horned Frogs from the 35th minute of play onward after TCU sophomore midfielder Kayla Hill scored the match’s first goal. Junior forward Emma Heckendorn sent a long pass to Hill, who then shot the ball to the left of WSU redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Ella Dederick. Dederick made three saves for the match, one more than opposing goalkeeper senior Shannon Coffer.

Following the loss of Johnson at the turn of the 70th minute after she picked up her second yellow card of the match, the Cougars were forced to play with only ten players on the field for the remainder of play. TCU senior defender Meghan Murphy and sophomore midfielder Karitas Tomasdottir also collected yellow cards in the 87th and 93rd minutes respectively.

The Cougars saving grace was Weaver, who made an unassisted goal off a rebounded shot and tied it up with less than two minutes to play and sent the match into overtime. The goal was Weaver’s fourth of the season after netting a hat trick in the team’s previous match against North Dakota State on Sept. 4.

The Horned Frogs were unable to respond in overtime, and the draw marked the first match of the season in which the team did not come away with a win.

The Cougars were outshot by TCU 8-4 in the first half, but rallied in the second frame to outshoot the Horned frogs 10-5.

Weaver and senior forward Amy Neal led WSU in shooting with both players tallying four shots for the match. Murphy led the Horned Frogs in shots with three and Eight TCU players recorded at least one shot in the match

The Cougars will return to their home turf to face Seattle University at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Lower Soccer Field.
