Prosecutor may decide whether to charge football player Monday

From staff reports

The Whitman County Prosecutor may decide as early as next week whether to file charges against a football player for allegedly assaulting a man at Domino’s in September.

Prosecutor Denis Tracy said after reviewing WSU senior safety Shalom Luani’s case, he may decide by Monday whether to charge him with second-degree assault, as Pullman police recommended.

Tracy said, however, that this depends on whether he has additional questions for police regarding the investigation. Once he is sure no further investigation is necessary, he may need more time for legal research and deliberation.

Tracy said he has not started reviewing the case, which he received from police Friday. He said he typically finishes his initial review of a case within a week or two of receiving it, but if he decides he needs more time after this, the process can take two weeks to a month.

After he files felony charges, if he decides to do so, Tracy said it takes four months on average to resolve the charges.

He said he has not received the cases regarding three other recent football player arrests. Sophomore linebacker Logan Tago was arrested on Sept. 12 in connection with an incident of second-degree robbery and second-degree assault in June, and redshirt senior nose tackle Robert Barber and redshirt freshman defensive lineman T.J. Fehoko were arrested on Friday following an investigation into an assault in July which left two students injured.
