Football player loses second parent in six months

Less than six months after the death of his father, WSU football offensive lineman Riley Sorenson lost his mother on Thursday, according to WSU Athletics.

Karen Sorenson’s death follows previous medical complications. During a game against UCLA on Nov. 14 Riley was informed that she had been hospitalized with stage 4 melanoma.

Though she was not expected to live past Thanksgiving, Karen survived to travel in December to El Paso, Texas, where Riley was supposed to play in the Hyundai Sun Bowl. Just before the game on Dec. 26, his father, Bart Sorenson, suffered a heart attack which led to his death on Jan. 5.

Riley recently received the 2016 Pac-12 Sportsmanship Award for his dedication to the team during the 2015 season, despite the difficulties he and his family had faced.

The WSU Athletic Department started a GoFundMe which has raised $16,000 to provide support for funeral and medical expenses. The department could not be reached for comment.
