Junior Victoria Matejevic prepares to return a forehand during the WSU Invitational at the Outdoor Tennis Courts on Oct. 4, 2015.

The women’s tennis team has traveled down to California to face its Pac-12 foes for the last time this season in the Pac-12 championships.

The Cougars who made the trip are senior Trang Huynh, junior Victoria Matejevic, and freshmen Aneta Miksovska and Barbora Michalkova. Due to injuries and team-related reasons seniors Maria Biryukova and Lize Leenknecht and sophomores Donika Bashota and Holly Monahan will not be playing in the tournament.

For Huynh this is the last collegiate tennis she will be able to play. After making the switch from Troy University in the Sun Belt Conference, Huynh has proven to be a vital member to the team.

“It’s my last chance of playing college tennis so its pushed me more to run for balls and try the best I can,” Huynh said.

The women’s tennis team has left everything on the court every time they go out and play, the one difference this time is that only the best players in the conference get into the tournament.

Head Coach Lisa Hart said that this tournament is a great experience for Miksovska and Michalkova because they will have three more years after this and Matejevic will be a senior next year.

“It’s a nice way to figure out what you need to work on for the summer so when you come back you are ready,” Hart said.

Miksovska has played this season like she was ready. In this season she has 29 singles wins with several wins coming in the deciding match.

“I played some matches that I didn’t play my best tennis and I won,” Miksovska said. “I have learned to fight even when I don’t play my best,” Miksovska said.

Although only four tennis players are traveling to California, their teammates are with them in spirit. The team functions as a family and have gone from eight individuals to becoming a team, something that Hart said is her fondest memory of the year.

The Cougars began play yesterday and will continue until April 24 in Ojai, California.
