Bohler plays host to a pair of California schools this weekend as the Washington State University volleyball team takes on UCLA tonight and No. 4 USC Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars (16-11, 3-11) are coming off a pair of sweeps on the road with mid-week matches against Arizona State and Arizona.

This is the second time WSU will face UCLA (13-11, 4-10) and USC (22-3, 12-2) this season. The Cougars were previously swept by USC and lost in four sets to UCLA on the road.

“We have to be consistent in our game, really limit those unforced errors,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said in a press conference. “That was pretty tough on us this last weekend. We had a lot of unforced errors.”

Freshman Kyra Holt leads the Cougars offense this year with 389 kills, enough for 3.93 kills per set. However, Holt struggled in the desert last week, hitting -.065 against Arizona due to her nine kills and 12 attack errors.

Junior Ver’Leea Hardaway has contributed 236 of her own kills while hitting a team-leading .364. Junior Jaicee Harris is the only other player for WSU with over 200 kills, currently sitting at 233 and hitting .150.

On the defensive side of the net, sophomore Kate Sommer leads the team in digs with 378 and senior Marcelina Glab leads the team in blocks with 98, 1.09 blocks per set.

Senior Camryn Irwin seems to have regained control of the setter position of late, leading the team with 900 kills while also contributing 24 service aces, which is the second most on the team behind Holt’s 32.

The Cougars will get a day to rest between the two matches, which Greeny said she thinks will benefit the team.

“We have had four back-to-back matches, the most in the Pac-12,” she said. “USC has had no back-to-back matches this year. So to have that day in between will probably be really nice.”

The Cougars may not be where they would like in the wins column, but Greeny said the improvement she has seen out of the players, the freshmen in particular, is promising.

“Any time you’re playing a lot of freshman like we are, you’re going to have your ups and downs,” Greeny said. “But just their overall growth from the beginning of the season until now has been tremendous.”

The Cougars take on UCLA tonight at 7 p.m. and No. 4 USC Sunday at 1 p.m. in a match televised on the Pac-12 Network.
