Student allegedly steals thousands

From staff reports

The Whitman County Prosecutor’s Office recently charged WSU student Aaliya Lewis, 20, with first-degree theft for allegedly stealing $10,000 while working for WSU Accounts and Receivables in August 2015.

According to Whitman County court records, Lewis allegedly misdirected two checks, each totaling $5,000, Aug. 21 and Aug. 27 of last year.

Rather than putting the money into the intended recipients’ accounts, Lewis put the money in her WSU student account while acting as if she was someone else.

According to court documents, the money from the first check was intended for another student’s account and the money from the second check was intended for an account associated with a “grant” program.

WSU paid the accounts from which Lewis misdirected the money $5,000 each and wants Lewis to reimburse the $10,000 as well as be held responsible, according to court documents.

Lewis is set to appear in Whitman County Superior Court April 29 at 10 a.m.
