From staff reports

The journey that pushed the women’s tennis team to new heights was a tiresome one that ended in Seattle as the team concluded its regular season play.

On Friday the No. 73 Cougars lost to the No. 55 University of Washington Huskies, 4-1.

In the doubles competition everything appeared to be fine. No. 33 Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi took a 6-1 win over sophomore Donika Bashota and junior Victoria Matejevic, 6-1.

The Cougars remained resilient and won the next two matches. Seniors Lize Leenknecht and Trang Huynh won 6-2 in convincing fashion. Senior Maria Biryukova and freshman Aneta Miksovska won, 6-3.

The Cougars took the 1-0 lead, which meant they only needed three more points to win the match. Unfortunately they didn’t win another match as the Huskies captured four consecutive points to beat the Cougars.

Freshman Barbora Michalkova lost to Elianne Douglas-Miron 6-4, 6-1. Abbes defeated Biryukova, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. In the sixth position Kobayashi beat Leenknecht, 7-6, 6-3. In the final match Sophia Bott defeated Huynh, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

Two matches were abandoned due to the Huskies’ victories in singles competition. Bashota had a slight lead over Stacey Fung in the third set, 7-5, 4-6, 2-1. Miksovska just finished her second set against Kenadi Hance when the match was called. Her match ended, 7-6 (2), 0-6.

The Cougars travel to the Pac-12 Championships this week. The tournament runs April 20-24 in Ojai, California.
