The Service and Activities Fee Committee met Thursday for their final hearing wherein student organizations proposed their budgets for the 2016-2017 fiscal years.

Athletics requested a 0 percent increase from last year’s allocation of $837,902. This money would fund the maintenance of student employment opportunities, scholarships, marketing and promotions, travel for games, and more.

“The PAC-12 conference is valuable, no matter how successful or unsuccessful a team is doing, there’s still something to be said about a team being in the PAC-12,” said Haley Yamane, a junior studying sports management.

Yamane said for every dollar that is invested into athletics, 60 percent of it is returned to the students.

Health & Wellness Services requested a 2 percent increase, equivalent to around $330,000. The funding would go toward continuing health promotion and education programs, influenza vaccines, and staff salaries. They also hope to expand their efforts regarding prevention of sex- and gender-based violence and suicide.

“This semester specifically, we started looking into how we can provide more programming to transgender students,” said Brad Stewart, assistant director of programming and outreach at Health & Wellness.

Multicultural Student Services requested $39,000 for the remodel of their Chicana/o Latina/o Student Center. They plan to remove a wall in order to create more space in accommodation for the increase in multicultural students on campus.

“Over the years, we’ve tried to move around the space and make it work for the students, but it hasn’t worked out,” said Mirna Barraza, co-chair of the Chicana/o Latina/o Student Alliance. “The remodel would create unity and space for students to feel welcome.”

The CUB proposed a 1.64 percent increase in their budget from last year totaling $1,533,230. This funding would sustain the programs and services the CUB offers to the 12,000 individuals who visit the facility each day.

Nearly 50 percent of their funding would go toward employee salaries.

“All of these programs and services we provide, there needs to be staff to make those happen,” said Sean Greene, CUB director.

Student Media requested a 0 percent increase, amounting to $187,500. The funding would help sustain The Daily Evergreen, the Chinook yearbook, the advertising and marketing department, the Web and Mobile department and the WSU Visitors Guide Magazine. Student Media would also allocate this funding toward hiring a new director and pursuing projects, such as expanding its foreign language podcasts.

Student involvement is requesting $938,942 to continue providing events and programs for students focusing on leadership. Funds will also be allocated to the Student Organization Center, Associated Students of Washington State University (ASWSU) and Student Entertainment Board (SEB).

SEB requested an increase of $5,500 for their concert budget. The funding will also go toward staff wages and events, such as the Up All Nights, guest speakers and film showings.

The ASWSU Administrative and Executive branch requested $263,991 in order to maintain their current programs, such as the executive program that sends students to the capitol to lobby with legislators. The Senate proposed a budget of $132,252, a 0 percent increase. Allen Cherry, senator and chair of the senate finance committee, emphasized the implementation of the Crimson Grant, which would be awarded to brand new student organizations. The Budget Council and Budget Compilation decreased their budget by $10,000, totaling $408,725. This branch is responsible for providing tools and opportunities for students to get involved in organizations on campus, such as KUGR and the Black Student Union.

S&A will hold deliberations on Tuesday, April 12 at 5 p.m. in Lighty 405.
