Tennis struggles against ranked opponents to open Pac-12 Championships

The Cougars struggled in the first day of the Pac-12 Championships in California.

In the singles championship senior Trang Huynh beat Annabell Andrinopoulos 6-3, 6-2. Afterward she faced No. 11 University of California’s Maegan Manasse. The match did not favor Huynh however, as she lost 6-1, 6-0 to Manasse.

Freshman Barbora Michalkova also lost in two sets after she took No. 51 University of Arizona’s Lauren Marker to the tiebreaker in the first set. Michalkova fell in the first set, 7-6(3), then could not get any momentum in the second set. The second set and victory went to Marker, 6-1.

In the singles Invitational junior Victoria Matejevic fell to Arizona State’s Gussie O’Sullivan, 6-4, 7-5. Freshman Aneta Miksovska also played in the invitational and suffered defeat to yet another Sun Devil, Alexandra Osborne. Osborne defeated Miksovska, 6-4, 7-5.

The doubles teams still have yet to play and will play Friday. Huynh and Matejevic face Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita from Oregon in the Doubles Championships at 2 p.m. The women’s tennis team played Oregon in the WSU Invitational in October and in March so there is some familiarity with between the two teams.

Michalkova and Miksovska face Colorado’s Alexandra Ajello and Kyra J. Wojcik in the Doubles Invitational at 2 p.m.

The Pac-12 Championships are televised on Pac-12 Network.
