Cougars drop final home matches to No. 1 Cal, No. 19 Stanford

From staff reports

While many students were enjoying the mom’s weekend activities with their mothers, the women’s tennis team was partaking in its last two home matches of the year.

On Friday afternoon the Cougars hosted the No. 1 University of California. The Bears won the match 6-1, but the Cougars went down swinging.

The match started with California taking an early lead in the doubles competition. Seniors Lize Leenknecht and Trang Huynh lost, 6-2. Freshman Aneta Miksovska and senior Maria Biryukova were defeated in the next match, 6-2.

The third match saw the Swedish duo of junior Victoria Matejevic and Donika Bashota losing 4-2 before the match was abandoned.

With California taking the first point, the Cougars needed four singles match victories to ultimately win. Unfortunately, the Bears took the next four points, to pass the mark of four points to win.

Despite having lost the match, Bashota managed to earn one point back for the Cougars as she defeated No. 12 Klara Fabikova, 6-7 (4), 6-0, 1-0 (9).

In the other singles matches all three seniors fought valiantly. Biryukova won four games in the second set, while Huynh won her second set, 6-3. Leenknecht also forced her opponent, No. 105 Olivia Hauger into a predicament when Hauger needed a seventh point in the second set to win the match.

Matejevic and Miksovska faced similar situations as their teammates. They won a handful of games in each set but were unable to get anything going.

On Saturday the women’s tennis team returned for another match against Stanford, and for Biryukova, Huynh, and Leenknecht this was the last home match of their careers.

The Cougars lost, 5-2.

No. 19 Stanford closed out the doubles competition, as both matches ended in 6-2 decisions for the Cardinal. In the third match, Leenknecht and Huynh were up 5-4 when the match was abandoned.

In the first match to finish, Leenknecht was unable to get anything going as she lost 6-2, 6-0. The next three matches saw the Cougars lose. Huynh was defeated, 6-3, 6-1. Freshman Barbora Michalkova saw her first action of the weekend in a 6-2, 6-3 loss. The last loss for the Cougars was Biryukova who battled admirably and forced No. 55 Carol Zhao into a 12th game of the second set.

Bashota and Miksovska followed their teammates by getting two points back. Both matches went to the third set after both lost their first set and won the second.

The Cougars wrap up their Pac-12 regular season at 12:30 p.m. on Friday when they take on University of Washington. The match will be televised on Pac-12 Network.
