Senior guard Dawnyelle Awa dribbles down the court during a game against Lewis-Clark State in Beasley Coliseum, Nov. 8, 2015.

From staff reports

WSU women’s basketball starting point guard Dawnyelle Awa operating the Cougars dribble-drive offense at Beasley Coliseum, either finishing with left-handed layups against taller defenders or hitting the likes of Borislava Hristova or Louise Brown off screen and rolls. As a four-year player, she is a quiet, competent floor general for Head Coach June Daugherty.

What probably is not well-documented is her extensive passion for the game both on and off the court, as noted in her desire to pursue a career in coaching after she graduates this spring.

Awa was selected to participate in the organization’s “So You Want To Be A Coach” program on Jan. 12 by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, which is designed to orchestrate a collaborative effort between the WBCA and NCAA to provide student-athletes with the tools and foundations necessary to become a successful athletic coach. Awa will participate in the event during Final Four Weekend at the WBCA National Convention in Indianapolis from April 1-3.

The primary aims of the program are to assist those interested in coaching through a series of workshops that foster professional development and career advancement through education, skills enhancement, networking and exposure opportunities.
