There would be no upset a second time for the WSU volleyball team, who fell to Arizona State 3-0 last night in Tempe, Ariz.

The Cougars fell to the Sun Devils with set scores of 22-25, 22-25 and 17-25 while being out-hit .242 to .144. The loss moves the Cougars to 16-10 on the season overall, 3-10 in conference play.

Freshman Kyra Holt led WSU with 11 kills while hitting only .077. Senior Marcelina Glab contributed 10 kills hitting .467.

The Cougars held leads in the first and second sets before surrendering long point runs to ASU, allowing the Sun Devils to pull away both times.

The third set was never in question, as ASU out-hit the Cougars .294 to .095.

WSU recorded four blocks in the first set before tallying only three in the final two sets. Both teams ended the match with seven total blocks.

The Cougars managed to land only one service ace in the match, tallying five service errors to go along with their 24 attack errors.

“Those first two sets, especially, were really close and we let them go on runs. Our passing broke down and then we couldn’t put the ball away,” WSU Head Coach Jen Greeny said in a press release. “They played some good defense and then in set three we couldn’t get the momentum back and recover.”

Senior Camryn Irwin saw most of the time at setter for the Cougs, recording 32 assists, one kill, seven digs and four blocks on the night.

Sophomore Kate Sommer led the Cougars with 24 digs.

The Cougars had no answer for Arizona State’s BreElle Bailey, who finished the night with 15 kills while hitting .286. ASU’s Whitney Follette managed to land eight kills with zero attack errors while hitting .571.

“Arizona State is definitely improving and is on the upswing. It was a tough loss. We couldn’t get anything going tonight,” Greeny said.

Next up for the Cougars is a match against Arizona at 7 tonight. The match will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks, and live updates can be found on The Daily Evergreen sports Twitter account, @EvergreenSports.
