Volleyball’s Woodford wins Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors

From staff reports

After an impressive showing at the Texas Tech Lone Star Showdown, Washington State freshman outside hitter McKenna Woodford was named the Pac-12 Conference Freshman of the Week.

Woodford led the Cougar volleyball team to three consecutive wins in straight sets last weekend at the tournament. In matches against Northwestern State, Texas Tech and Portland State, she finished with 34 kills, 18 digs and seven blocks. She also won Tournament MVP honors for her performance.

These are not the first accolades that Woodford has received in her young Cougar career; she was named to the All-Tournament team at the Radford Highlander Invitational during her first weekend of collegiate action.

Head Coach Jen Greeny’s 2015 roster features eight freshmen, making up more than half of the roster. This year’s recruiting class was ranked 21st in the nation, according to PrepVolleyball.com.

Freshman middle blocker Taylor Mims has also come on strong recently, being named to the All-Tournament team in each of the Cougs’ last two tournaments.

WSU opens Pac-12 play against UW at 7p.m. this Thursday in Bohler Gymnasium.
