Swift start for WSU track & field team

From staff reports

The Washington State Cougars’ track & field team wrapped up its Los Angeles tour with several first-place finishes at the inaugural Jim Bush Team Invitational in UCLA’s Drake Stadium.

On a rare Tuesday competition, the Cougars had one day off after competing in the Trojan Invitational at USC last weekend.

The Cougars were especially strong on the women’s side, as senior Bria’una Watley won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.25 seconds. Sophomore Danielle Darden and junior Dominique Keel finished second and third, respectively, sweeping the field with times of 24.47 and 24.55 seconds. Darden also won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.94 seconds. Keel placed third in the same event.

Junior CharLee Linton and sophomore Morgan Willson topped the field in the 3000-meter run. Linton won the event, finishing in 8:51.494, while Willson came in next at 8:57.801.

The Cougars also took the top three spots in the triple jump, with sophomore Kiana Davis, junior Kayla Warren, and freshman Greer Alsop finishing one-two-three. Davis’s 12.29-meter jump was the best of the day.

Later in the day, the women’s 4X400 meter relay team won with a time of 3:44. The team was made up of senior Bree Winfrey, sophomore Liz Harper, junior Christiana Ekelem and senior Erin Allen.

The women’s team finished second in the three-team field with 136 points. UCLA placed first with 150, and Long Beach State placed third with 74.

On the men’s side, sophomore C.J. Allen won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.91, and Jesse Jorgensen grinded out the 800-meter run in 1:47.

In the field events, junior Austin Sodorff cleared 5.05 meters in the pole vault. Freshman Bradley and senior Kyle Stevens finished second and third in the javelin after strong performances at USC over the weekend in the same event.

Drew Jordan showed up for the distance runners, winning the 1500-meter race in 3:46.23.

The Cougars will take the weekend off before traveling to Palo Alto to compete in the Stanford Invitational, April 3 and 4. There will be just one more meet between then and the prestigious Mt. SAC relays in Walnut, California, which begin Tuesday, April 14.
