WSU has partnered with Spin, which supplies rentable e-scooters and bikes throughout WSU, to give out free helmets.
The helmets, which do not need to be returned, come in small, medium and large, though sizes may vary based on supply. The helmets are available at the Compton Union Building, Chinook and University Recreation.
The push for free helmets comes from members of the Town Gown Collaborative subcommittee College Hill Matters, which aims to make College Hill more accessible and safer. Members have expressed concern over rarely seeing students riding e-scooters with helmets.
College Hill Matters explored possible ways to get helmets to students. They did not find a solution until the Safety and Wellness Fair in October 2024 where SPIN had a booth and was giving out free helmets.
“It was a solution to the problem we’ve been working on,” College Hill Matters member Jessica Perone said.
When WSU and SPIN initially partnered in March 2023, SPIN gave out free helmets for a short period of time, Perone said. After WSU received the first shipment of 100 helmets on Oct. 15, they were all taken within a day.
WSU received the most recent shipment of 60 helmets on Dec. 9. The shipment was split between three locations: the Chinook, the CUB and the UREC.
“As [SPIN] gets more stock, they bring it. They don’t have a huge warehouse of them,” Perone said.
