The Undocumented Student Center is being renamed to the Multicultural Student Center.
All references to the Undocumented Student Center in the Compton Union Building and online have been wiped. The sign on the door has also been covered with a piece of paper that says “We [heart] WSU.”
The Multicultural Student Center will fulfill the same duties as the Undocumented Student Center, under a different name, according to Multicultural Student Services.
It is unclear when this change was made, though President Elizabeth Cantwell previously signaled diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives may face name changes.
“If we care too much about whether we call it literally DEI or something else, we have missed the mark because we will not only paint a target on our backs, we won’t have examined what the work that needs to be done is,” Cantwell said. “How are we going to make sure that we can do what we need to do in order to support our students and not lose money or risk having our students targeted? I think that’s as dangerous as losing money.”
WSU administrators have been scrambling to deal with the Trump Administration’s research cuts and, more recently, the removal of student visas.
As of April 11, three WSU students have had their visas revoked by the Trump Administration, according to NWPB. Each of the students participated in pro-Palestine protests. One student had already graduated and moved out of the country.
WSU was not notified by the federal government, instead having to rely on a visa status system called the Student Exchange Visitor Information System Database.
The Undocumented Student Center opened in 2021. The center aimed to help create a safe space on campus for undocumented students.
