Strong showing for WSU runners

Washington State sprinters earned personal-best times in the 200-meter races on Friday and continued their momentum into Saturday’s competition by winning eight events at the Jacksons Invite/New Balance Boise Indoor meet in Nampa, Idaho.

Sophomore Dominique Keel finished strong for the Cougars in the women’s 200-meter dash with a time of 24.63 seconds for third place, but it was sophomore Terrance Chambers who finished with a personal-best time for the men’s 200 with 21.89, which earned him sixth place.

In the field events, junior Matt Wardell threw the shot put for a personal best of 51 feet and 10 and half inches for third place, and his brother sophomore Sam Wardell threw the weight throw for a personal-record distance of 44-4 inches.

In the Saturday events redshirt junior Jacob Sealby dominated the sprints by taking the 400-meter dash and earning a personal best time of 47.19 seconds.  He then teamed up with his twin brother redshirt junior Lucas Sealby at the end of the meet along with Chambers and freshman CJ Allen to win the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 3 minutes and 16.75 seconds.

“Jacob Sealby had a solid early season race and a good time since he hasn’t raced in a year,” said Head Coach Rick Sloan. “The 4-by-4 relay star was Lucas Sealby with a strong 47.9 split and after going out strong.”

In the 800-meter events, redshirt junior Jesse Jorgensen championed the men’s side with a time of 1:51.87, while junior Abby Regan and senior Ruby Roberts finished one-two in the 800 with times of 2:11.90 and 2:12.80, respectively.

Sloan said Regan and Roberts looked very strong in their events as Roberts used her cross-country strength to come on strong, but Regan was able to hold her off.

The women’s 4×400 relay teams also had success in the meet, led by the team of junior Erin Allen, sophomore Christiana Ekelem, junior Bree Winfrey, and Keel with a time of 3:49.69.

WSU also excelled in the field events with redshirt junior Charlotte Muschamp leading the way in the triple jump. Muschamp earned another indoor personal-best distance of 39-feet 1/4 inches. Sloan said this was tough meet for Muschamp, but she was able to overcome the odds.

“Charlotte Muschamp struggled a little in the early part of the triple jump, but got the win,” Sloan said. “She is very fit and strong and capable of going over 40 feet. “

Sophomore Austin Sodorff won the men’s pole vault with an indoor personal-record height of 16-6 3/4 inches, and junior PJ Benedictus won the men’s triple jump with an indoor personal-record distance of 49-3 inches.  Sloan said this was Benedictus’ first triple jump competition and he’s still trying to figure out his run and find his rhythm in the jumping.

Other Cougars who had success included redshirt junior Bria’una Watley, who earned a personal-record time of 7.77 in the 60-meter sprints, and Winfrey, Erin Allen, and Keel finished in the top six in the 400-meter dash.

“Overall this was a good meet with a lot of things I was excited and encouraged by,” Sloan said.  “Some of the people we are depending on as a team are lagging behind and others are doing a great job. We need to get everybody on board as we move forward.”
