The Palouse is full of places to hike, climb and explore and at Kamiak Butte you can do all of the above.

Although Pullman may look like the ravaged highways of “Zombieland” during the summer, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a bevy of activities for the handful of survivors.

The Pullman Parks and Recreation department marks one of the best choices for year-round Pullmanites with a wide selection of things to do in the next few months.

“This year’s motto is something for everyone,” Recreation Manager Kurt Dahmen said, “whether its families with preschool kids or a variety of senior activities.”

Parks and recreation has also teamed up with Resonate Church to hold the event “Movies in the Park” four Fridays this summer at Reaney Park, he said.

Reaney Park will also host “Concerts in the Park” for six weeks this season, Dahmen said.

There are a variety of things to do outside of parks and recreation for the brave souls who stayed behind in Pullman this summer.

If you are feeling extra brazen, you could train for a marathon.

The Spokane Marathon is set to run Oct. 8 and is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon, according to the marathon’s website. This would give you ample time to pick up new Asics running shoes, a pair of wraparound sunglasses and the will to live.

When the temperature reaches near triple digits, you can seek the oasis that is Village Centre Cinemas in Pullman. Let the air-conditioned movie theater cool you as you sip Coca-Cola and enjoy the latest eighties remake featuring The Rock. Coming to theaters near you in July, The Rock is Captain Indiana Jones Bond.

After you have seen the newest Pirates of the Caribbean, you will probably be itching to get out into the world to go on a swashbuckling adventure.

Drive 14 miles up Highway 27 to Kamiak Butte County Park to hike the 3.5 mile Pine Ridge Trail, which climbs to an elevation of 3,641 feet, according to Whitman County’s website.

There are also seven camping sites available until Oct. 15 if you are feeling the need to sleep on a bed of pine needles, jagged rocks and tears.

Once you have traversed the Pine Ridge Trail, drive a few more miles up the road to Wawawai Canyon Winery to drop by their vineyard and tasting room from noon – 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, according to their website.

After a few sips, you’ll be kicking yourself while you mumble, “Why, why, oh why have I never been here before?”

Are you looking to go on a daylong escapade? Drive two and a half hours down the road to Riggins, Idaho, where Salmon River Experience is located. The company offers a variety of whitewater rafting trips or fishing, according to Salmon River Experience, if you want to pretend you are being simulcast on ESPN 8: The Ocho.

Those were just a few ideas for things to do this summer on the Palouse. If all else fails, follow U2 around the nation on their summer tour in a Volkswagen Van and call it “Bono’s Brigade.”
