WSU student dies in car crash on I-90 returning to Pullman on Saturday

A nine-car pileup just west of Cle Elum left one WSU student dead and three injured.

One WSU student died and four more were injured in a nine-car pileup Saturday afternoon during a snowstorm in North-Central Washington.

Washington State Patrol Trooper Brian Moore said there was a three-car crash around 2 p.m. west of Cle Elum on Interstate 90. Sophomore Dashiell Mortell died at the scene. Senior Andrew Hammond was the driver, and the other passengers included brothers senior Justin Crawford and freshman John Crawford, as well as student Morgan Chanlin. John Crawford was transported to Harborview Hospital. Justin Crawford, Hammond and Chanlin were transported to Kittitas Valley Hospital.

According to the police report, a car in front of them slowed to a stop due to another collision ahead. The students’ car, a 1996 Ford Explorer, failed to slow and struck the other car in the rear. The Explorer rolled and came to rest on its driver’s side in the roadway. A pickup truck behind them also failed to stop and struck the Explorer in the roof. The truck then veered to the right side of the road and came to rest on top of the eastbound jersey barrier.

There were no serious injuries among the passengers of the other two cars, and all involved were wearing seatbelts.

A few seconds later, there was a six-car crash in the same location that also resulted in one serious injury. The troopers have separated the two incidents due to the fatality in the first one.

Washington State Patrol is currently investigating the causes of both accidents.

There were 154 crashes in North-Central Washington between midnight Saturday and 5 p.m. Sunday. 118 of them occurred on I-90 in Grant and Kittitas County during the massive influx of students the weekend before WSU spring classes begin. The Evergreen has not confirmed that students were involved in any other crashes.
