Pullman residents attend the democratic caucus on Saturday at the Pullman High School. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders won the caucus in every Washington county, for a total victory margin of 45.6 percent over Hillary Clinton.

From staff reports

Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders swept Whitman County, along with the rest of Washington, in the democratic caucus on Saturday.

Sanders won the caucus by a margin of 45.6 percent. Democrats filled the Pullman High School cafeteria and it was clear who the majority wanted when shouts of “feel the Bern” could be heard as soon as the caucusing process began.

Voters divided up into precincts to begin tallying their votes and discussing the two candidates, Sanders and Hillary Clinton.

Within the precincts voters made quick 3-minute presentations explaining why they were voting for their candidate.

The main items discussed for Clinton were that she is “practical” and good at compromising, and for Sanders that he is genuine and would break up the banks.

“He reeks of honesty and he reeks of sincerity,” said Bethany Marshall, a biological sciences instructor at WSU, about seeing Sanders in person in Spokane.

Her 15-year-old daughter Erin Marshall said, “I can’t actually vote but it’s important to exercise your right … hopefully I’ll be able to re-elect Sanders.”

First-time caucus volunteer Sandra Pagan spoke of the importance of encouraging everyone to vote, no matter who they are voting for.

“We are here as a group of like-minded people,” Pagan said. “I decided to volunteer for my children, to set an example for them … I think it’s very important we get involved.”

The Whitman County Democratic Convention will be held Sunday, May 1.
