No criminal charges against driver of truck that collided with WSU student

From staff reports

The Washington State Patrol (WSP) has dropped a potential criminal case against a Lacrosse teenager who survived a recent fatal car crash on State Route 26.

The WSP has no indication to suggest 18-year-old Jason Wigen was criminally responsible for the crash that happened on Nov. 22 which resulted in the death of 20-year-old WSU student Morgan Cope, WSP Sgt. Courtney Shawley told Pullman Radio News (PRN).

The initial report from troopers stated Wigen was driving a pickup truck when he crossed the center line near Dusty, colliding with Cope’s sedan.

According to PRN, troopers at the time noted charges may be pending against Wigen, who suffered serious injuries and was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he is still in recovery. Wigen is currently listed in satisfactory condition.

Accidents are hardly a rarity on SR 26. Since 2000, the Washington State Department of Transportation has recorded 42 traffic-related deaths on the route and more than 1,400 injuries.
