Deceased male found on south side of WSU campus

WSU PD working with Whitman County Coroner’s office to investigate

Update 4/15/2023: The Whitman County Coroners’ office has released the identity of the male that was found deceased south of Stephenson Hall. The cause of death was determined to be suicide from asphyxiation from hanging. 


WSU Police responded to a call at 12:39 a.m. Thursday, at Stephenson Complex where officers discovered a deceased male just south of the complex, according to a news release from WSU Police Department. 

Based on the information available at this time, WSU PD does not believe there is an active threat or safety concern on campus, WSU Police Chief Gary Jenkins said. 

The body of the deceased male has already been transported to the Whitman County Coroner’s office to undergo an autopsy, he said. 

WSU PD is actively working with the Coroner’s office to investigate the death. The name of the individual and the cause of death will be released by the Coroner’s office, according to the release. 

The community will be notified immediately if there is a change to the threat assessment, and any updates regarding the investigation will be posted here.
