WSU students in the Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textile program showcase their custom designed outfits at the 30th Annual Mom’s Weekend Fashion Show at Beasley Coliseum, April 13, 2013.

Fashionable Cougs from across the globe will join forces this evening for the apparel merchandising, design and textiles department’s 31st Annual Mom’s Weekend Fashion Show.

The show, titled “Pulse,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Beasley Coliseum and present collections created by junior and senior designers.

The production crew for the Mom’s Weekend Fashion Show has been working hard to make this year’s show the best on record, said Janett Auh, a promotional team leader.

“It can get a little crazy at times, but nonetheless it is fun and a great experience to see how much teamwork, planning and organizing goes into putting a fashion show together,” Auh said.

Teams of stage managers and assistants, hair and make-up coordinators, program designers, dressers, and promotions teams are among the many behind-the-scenes workers committed to presenting the best student-made collections.

Elizabeth Carrell, a senior AMDT student and designer, will present her collection “BitterSweet” on the runway this year.

In high school, Carrell first became interested in fashion because of her passion for drawing and frequent viewing of the TV show “Project Runway.”

“I soon learned how to sew a pattern from a store and came to WSU with the hopes of becoming a fashion designer or mechanical/electrical engineer,” she said.

Carrell’s fashion line draws inspiration from Disney parks, which she has interned with in the past.

“The garments are unique and strong but have exaggerated flare to make them stand out in a crowd,” she said. “It is costume meets the real world.”

Another senior designer, Abby Conley, will present her collection “Enchanted Forest,” inspired by nature and architecture.

Conley has been interested in fashion since she was young and began sketching designs in fifth grade. Her goal through this program is to one day design historic or fantasy costumes for movies, theatre and film.

Conley has spent a lot of time in the studio preparing for the fashion show this last week.

“Almost anything creative takes a great deal of hard work, but it is so worth it in the end,” she said

As their work comes to a close this weekend, their journey will become a celebration, Auh said.
