From Staff Reports

Trampolines, a psychological mystery film and a lot of pie will be provided by the Department of Mathematics this week in celebration of Pi Day, March 14.

Not only will the infinite decimal be celebrated, but the Math Learning Center will be raising awareness of its tutoring opportunities for students.

“This [event] is to let the campus know we’re here,” Nathan Hamlin, an instructor with the mathematics department, said.

Tutoring services for all math classes are available and the math learning center has recently been refurbished with new tables, chairs, whiteboards, and hanging labels signifying different math classes.

Hamlin said the math learning center is a permanent resource on campus.

Students and student-run organizations, like Math Club, have worked with the Department of Mathematics to organize this entire week of activities for students. Hamlin said they want students to recognize the unofficial holiday and promote the Math Learning Center as a tool.

The first event is a Sudoku challenge at 9 p.m. today. With team and individual challenges, students can compete to win prizes such as gift cards and pies.

The Rec Center will host a Pi Ball tournament at 7 p.m. Tuesday. This event will be centered on a game similar to spike ball. The winners will receive bragging rights, prizes and more pie. Teams of two can register at urec.wsu.edu.

The Math Club will stop by Cleveland Hall at noon Wednesday to give a lesson on origami.

Psychological mystery “Proof,” staring Gwyneth Paltrow will screen in the Math Learning Center and free popcorn will be featured at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Spring break kicks off Friday with the MLC Open House beginning at 12 p.m. Free food (including pie), music and a numbers contest will be featured.

The contest will challenge students to recite the most digits of pi from memory for a gift card to The Bookie as prize.

All events aside from the Pi Ball Tournament held at the rec will be hosted in the Math Learning Center located at Cleveland Hall, room 130.
