Sophistafunk has created their own style through the mix of electronic, hip-hop and funk. This unique trio from Syracuse, New York has found a way to show the world what they produce through touring in the UK and now the United States.

“Sophistafunk is a multi-genre tour de force, jam packed with vintage tones and live instruments,” said Rebecca Venkauskas, public relations manager.

They’ll be coming to John’s Alley Tavern in Moscow, Idaho on Jan. 28 and 29 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $5.

The band’s name was picked up from phrases previously used in the music industry coming from Jack McDuff’s album “Sophisticated Funk” as well as the term “sophistafunk” itself, which is actually used in the lyrics to Outkast’s song, ‘Behold a Lady’.

“We just wanted to find a name that would describe our music and what we’re about and Sophistafunk fit,” said Adam Gold, pianist and bassist.

Since meeting in 2007, the band consists of three members, including Gold, Jack Brown on vocals, and Emmanuel Washington on drums. These musicians all contribute to the production of their music, each writing their parts for songs but also helping each other out to create something that can be universally shared.

“It’s not very common to see artists who write their own music anymore,” Gold said. “I’ve been playing piano since I was four, then I started on jazz piano in my teens and began to write music and I feel blessed that I get to travel the world and share the music I make.”

They’ve had the opportunity to perform with a variety of artists and bands including Fergie and Sean Kingston. Although their music is quite different from what most people are used to, they have a diverse audience and continue to aim their music to all ages.

Sophistafunk knows no limits when it comes to broadening their fan base. “We’ve got kids in diapers dancing to our music,” Gold said.

Venkauskas herself is confident in the bands performance.  “Catch one show, and you will be hooked!” she said.

In their present winter tour, Sophistafunk will be performing in various states including Ohio, New York, California, and Oregon to name a few.
