Naked Smoky allows for both a daytime and nighttime look, combining bold tones with the neutral shades typically found in Naked palettes.

Urban Decay took the beauty world by storm when it launched the original Naked palette. Its empire has been built on these expensive yet powerful palettes that are known by the majority of cosmetics lovers.

Whenever a new palette is released, everyone from beauty gurus to makeup beginners flock to Sephora in hopes that Urban Decay’s newest edition will live up to its high standards.

Naked Smoky, which was released this summer, is the fourth palette in the collection. It is quite different from the other three, although its $54 price tag has stayed the same.

To most, the Naked Smoky is a hit-or-miss. While the previous Naked palettes stuck to either warm or cool shades, the Naked Smoky has shades from both spectrums. The left side of the palette has four warm-toned shades that are similar to those from the original Naked. Farther to the right, the colors become cooler and more colorful.

Urban Decay has set the stage for neutral eye colors, and this palette is certainly reinventing the idea of Naked. The previous palettes contained basic, natural shades with mixed finishes, so you would find matte highlight shades next to bold shimmer tones.

The best thing about the Naked Smoky is the addition of color. Unlike the older palettes, the Naked Smoky is combining bold tones like blues and purples with the same neutral shades that Naked fans love.

The Naked Smoky strays away from an everyday eye look, and leans toward night looks that are fitting for parties and date nights. That isn’t to say, though, that you can’t take advantage of this palette’s neutral tones for the daytime.

In the way of versatility, this palette certainly beats its predecessors. There is a range of shades, which makes this day-to-night transition so simple.

The downfall of this palette, however, is its one-size-fits-all attitude. With the previous Naked palettes, it was easy to figure out which one was intended for each skin tone. The Smoky palette markets itself universally, so some of the shades do not do justice on certain users.

The consistency of the shadow formula is not familiar to Urban Decay users, either. Naked palettes have always been known for their buttery consistency, but Naked Smoky feels chalkier.

Even though the textures may be different, fans of Naked Smoky are quite satisfied with its shadow payoff.

So if you are into day-to-night looks that involve a color range from blues to purples, the Naked Smoky is a great investment. If you aren’t looking for a bold eye, save your $54 and stick to neutrals.
