Beautiful undertones

You just ordered a super cute navy blue body con dress online and are overjoyed to see it come in the mail. However, as you try on the dress, you begin to notice that it doesn’t look nearly as good on you as it does on the model. You think to yourself, “Maybe navy blue just isn’t my color?”

The truth is, color matters, and we have “our colors” for a reason. It’s all due to the way our skin expresses its own color and is a huge part of why we look better in some colors than others.

There are many different shades of skin; however, there are three main skin tones. These are called undertones, or the tint that is naturally given off by your skin. Identifying your undertone is based on some characteristics specific to each tone.

Warm undertones are characterized by a greenish tint to the skin. Those with warm undertones are known to look better in gold than silver because of the way their undertones match up with the metal. In addition, warm skin has a tendency to tan rather than burn.

However, fair skin with warm undertones may not fit this characteristic. Those with warm under-toned skin usually have greenish-blue, hazel or chocolate colored eyes. Natural hair hue ranging from golden-blonde to rich black is found with warm tones.

The best colors to compliment warm undertones are bright pastels such as coral and mint, and muted fall colors such as red, brown, and orange. Warm-toned celebrities include Heidi Klum, Penelope Cruz and Beyoncé.

If your skin has a bluish tint, you have cool undertones. Silver, rather than gold, looks better on those with cool undertones. There is a tendency for those with cool undertones to burn in the sun; however deeper-toned individuals may not find this to be true.

Individuals with cool-toned skin find that they have steel-toned eyes, such as ice blue, gray or brown with silver tint. Their natural hair hue ranges from light blonde to true black.

Colors that look best on cool-tones are jewel colors such as navy blue, deep purple and hot pink. Additionally, true shades such as pure black or white look better than washed black or ivory. Cool-toned celebrities include Taylor Swift, Anne Hathaway and Halle Berry.

There are some people, however, who cannot be characterized by warm or cool-toned skin, but are, rather, neutral. There are a range of hair and eye colors that accompany neutral-toned skin.

Those with this undertone can wear colors from the full spectrum, since they look good in the colors worn by both warm and cool tones. Celebrities with neutral toned skin include Reese Witherspoon and Selena Gomez.

So if you are the girl or guy who just realized that your navy blue dress just doesn’t fit you, maybe it’s because your skin would actually prefer a baby blue dress instead. Next time you go looking for that perfect formal dress, remember how certain colors will flatter you depending on your undertone.
